Cool Runnings

June 27th, 2008

So i’ve recently started the “Couch to 5-K” running plan and have begun my exploration of the Clio Bike path.  It’s fortunately exactly 3 miles to the end and back, so it works really well for my workout.  The workout, as well as a Podcast to guide you on your run, can be found here.  Anyone else feel like getting in shape with me?

I’m currently on Week 2 of 9, which consists of 2 minute walk/90 second run intervals.  The intervals will get me to running a full 5k by the end of the 9 weeks. My phone can track and calculate my workouts, so I’ll be periodically posting my results (you probably don’t care, but it’s extra incentive for me to do it.)

Today’s workout:

Distance: 3.4 miles

Time: 34:20

Average Speed: 6mph

Max Speed: 14.5mph

Calories burnt: 569.1

we’ll see if I end up as a running machine by the end of summer.

Top 10 Movie Robots

June 26th, 2008

To honor the upcoming release of the new Pixar film, Wall-E, I thought I’d take a trip with Luke Skywalker and drag some of my favorite movie robots from the Jawa scrapheap. They may be steel and wire, but they can sure warm our hearts.

Check out my list of the Top 10 Movie Robots over the I Heart Movies Blog!

Oh, Melanie

June 25th, 2008

A Barbie Doll of Tippi Hedron as Melanie Daniels in The Birds.  I’ve always assumed that her bad taste in that olive green dress was why the birds hated her so much.

“Look at the gas, that man’s lighting a cigar!”

I love this doll more than life itself.  You can procure this artifact as a present for me here.

Summertime

June 24th, 2008

I’m hard pressed to find anything more perfect than the Summer Anthem; a song that whispers “Hey, bitches. It’s hot outside” on a cool evening’s breeze.  The Pantheon of Summer Anthems include ballads such as:

  • Bryan Adams - Summer of 69
  • 2Pac - California Love
  • Ace of Base - Cruel Summer
  • LFO - Summer Girls
  • Sisqo - The Thong Song
  • Nelly - Hot in Herre
  • Weezer - Island in the Sun
  • Justin Timberlake - Summer Love

However, a new track as ascended to the Heavens to become the new Summer Anthem.

New Kids on the Block - Summertime

Yes, the New Kids have returned like the Phoenix (something that, like summer, is hot) to deliver the message that the Summer Season has arrived, and it’s okay for us to unbutton our shirts and mack on the ladies.

My spirit explodes like the 4th of July when I hear this track and it’s the perfect tune for rolling down the highway in your drop-top.

Check out this new video from the New Kids and get ready, because bitches, it’s hot outside.

So basically, I’ve been feeling crafty lately and I thought I’d share some of my work with you!

1. ipod Case - I made this from a lone fuzzy sock I found at the bottom of my drawer.  Works nicely to keep my iPod scratch free.

2. Korean-Style Sleeveless Hoodie - I had wanted a Korean-Style sleeveless hoodie like the one shown, so I decided to make one by recycling an old SVSU sweatshirt. I removed the sleeves and hood, scooped the neck, and then reattached the hood using some extra fabric from the sleeves.  I like how it turned out.

3. Cuffed denim Manpris - I know y’all are naysayers, but I think they’re cute.  And I had some denim I was going to throw out anyway.  I slimmed down the legs and stitched the rolled cuffs into place.

4. Finally, I decided to make a new wallet.  I used denim from the pant legs of my manpris.  I used a serger to get the selvage look and left the edges to fray.

What do you all think?

Live long and Prosper

June 18th, 2008

As I made my drive home from work, NPR was highlighting the stories of some of the newlyweds in San Fransisco, many of whom were getting married on the spot in the courthouse. Today marked the first day of gay marriage in the state of California. Officials said about 2,000 couples were filing for marriage in the San Fransisco in the next 90 days. Listening to one of the couples give their vows was a little bittersweet; while it was incredibly cute and romantic, it was also a reminder of the battle has been fought and how far it is from over. A bill in November could ban gay marriages once again and invalidate those licenses. But it occurred to me as the rain started to sprinkle on my windshield that marriage isn’t really that important in this day and age, and has been invalidated over and over in heterosexual relationships. If those marriages ARE dissolved by the state, so what? Does the love dissolve with that piece of paper? Is that kind of bond something that can be taken away?

When did American become so crazy about marriage? The United States has become the world’s largest Bridezilla.

I’m confident that even if the bill passes, those vows won’t be broken.

On a lighter note, guess who’s getting married? Delightfully flamboyant, George Takei!

“Star Trek” star George Takei is ready to “live long and prosper” with his partner of 21 years. Takei will marry 54-year-old Brad Altman on September 14th in Los Angeles.

The 71-year-old actor, known for his role as Sulu on the “Star Trek” sci-fi TV series, was the first to pay $70 for a marriage license in West Hollywood early Tuesday. The marriage license is good for 90 days.

Takei was jubilant, saying “it’s going to be the only day like this in our lives and it is the only day like this in the history of America.”

He told reporters and a swelling crowd outside the West Hollywood city auditorium “may equality live long and prosper.”

The California Supreme Court has legalized same-sex marriage. (AP)

George’s partner is 17 years his junior. Damn. It must be the AZN charm.

And you’re telling me no one knew he was gay? Please.

Today, I’m thankful for Sulu’s oily muscles, Battlestar Galactica, double fudge brownies, NPR, and the night air.
